Arthur R. Newton, 56, Kansas City, Kan., formerly of Troy, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1993, at the University of Kansas Medial Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, Mission, Kan. Graveside services and burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Cemetery, Troy.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Harouff-Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home and from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Arthur R. Newton Scholarship Fund at the M.E. Pearson School or the Cancer Research Department at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Mr. Newton was born July 11, 1936, in Troy, the son of Fay A. and Mary C. Mackey Newton. He attended Troy Elementary School and was a 1956 graduate of Troy High School. He received a bachelor's degree from Emporia State Teachers College and his master's degree in education from Kansas University in Lawrence.
He taught elementary school in Hiawatha for three years before moving to Kansas City. He also taught at Hazel Grove, Claude Huyck and John F. Kennedy elementary schools in Kansas City and was principal at Major Hudson and Morse schools. At the time of his death, he had been serving as principal at M.E. Pearson Elementary School, Kansas City, Kan.
Mr. Newton had worked at Western Auto Stores, retiring as an evening salesman after 25 years. He had worked for the past five years at Wal-Mart.
He was an Army veteran having served from 1956-1960. He was a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, Mission, the Kansas National Education Association, and the National Education Association.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Walter in 1970.
Survivors include a son, Dean Newton, Overland Park; a daughter, Shannon Newton, Overland Park; his mother, Mary C. Newton, Troy; a sister, Viola Duncan, Troy; and a number of nieces and nephews.
